Introducing Cold Callers: The London-based duo talk “As the Sun Sets” EP, inspirations and new music.

After being introduced to Cold Callers in December of 2017 at The LDNRBS Experience show, and subsequently having their exceedingly smooth “As the Sun Sets” EP on repeat ever since, we reached out to learn a bit more about them.

Check out “As the Sun Sets” on Apple Music here, Spotify here or Soundcloud here.

1. Where does the name Cold Callers originate from?

The name comes from the feeling of being judge before being heard. Where we’re from, promoting your passion feels like you’re a door to door salesman being ignored or having the door closed in your face. We’ve only recently come to realise, the reactions we received are fairly normal for creatives.

2. How about your solo names, Toch-UQ and Timi.B?

They’re abbreviated versions of our government names.

3. James Keith when writing for Complex UK, said that the Cold Callers “blur the lines between hip-hop, R&B and soul”. Which genre(s) would you say best describes your music?

To be honest, we’d say the same. Hip Hop is definitely the heart of it but our melodies stem from our R&B and soul influences.

4. What is each of your favourite tracks from your “As The Sun Sets” EP? Why?

Toch: Mines ‘Summer Lovin’’ because the vulnerability of the track. Creating it was therapeutic and the process was as smooth as the final version.

Timi: Yeah, it has to be ‘Summer Lovin’ because it’s from my personal experience.

5. Who produced the cover artwork for the “As The Sun Sets” EP?

The cover art was made by our managers girlfriend, Ruby.

Ruby and Boya are the masterminds behind our video for Summer Nights.

We were all in the room working on the final edit of the video. All of sudden, Ruby opens photoshop and starts creating the cover art, the rest is history.

6. Are there any specific artists or groups you’d like to collaborate with?

Toch: Pharrell, Monte Booker, James Fauntleroy and Cam O’bi

Timi: Steve lacy, Anderson Paak and SZA

7. To you individually, who are your top 5 artists of all time (all genres)?

Toch: Michael Jackson, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean and if I’m allowed Andre 3000

Timi: Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Kid Cudi and Anderson Paak

8. What are you listening to at the moment?

Toch: To name a few; Snoh Aalegra, Robert Glasper, Smino, Kenneth Whalum and Taite Imogen

Timi: At the moment I’m listening to Smino, Anderson Paak and Ravyn Lenae

9. Best piece of life advice you’ve received?

Timi: Love yourself.

Toch: In everything you do, put God first – Proverbs 3:6

10. What would your advice be to someone who has a creative passion that they want to make a career out of?

Firstly, study your creative field, work on your craft daily and surround yourself with people who are on a similar journey.

Be patient. Don’t be let your decisions be led by fear. Fear of failure, fear of not being too niche etc. Do it because it’s what you love, and the fortune will find you. Most importantly make sure you keep creative control.

11. When can we expect new music from Cold Callers?

Our new EP will be out at the end of March.

Thanks Toch and Timi!
